Diabetes Blood Test Should Not Drawn on Arm Finger

To know a person's blood sugar levels usually do a check of blood in the finger. But to make the diagnosis of diabetes, blood taken from blood vessels in the arm and not the finger. "In diagnosing diabetes, blood taken from a vein or artery from the arm and not the capillary blood vessels in the hand (finger)," said Dr. Dr. Budiman Widjodjo, SpPD in a press conference Increase Public Awareness On The Case of Metabolic and Endocrine forPreventing Chronic Complications resulting, at the Hotel Nikko Jakarta, Wednesday (06/08/2011).
Dr. Budiman said somebody said to diabetes if the classic symptoms that arise and blood tests after a meal (2 hours) above 200 mg / dL, or the classic symptoms that arise and fasting blood tests at least 8 hours worth more than 126 mg / dL.

"There is also an oral glucose test, ie a person may eat as usual and then asked to fast and be given sugar by 75 grams for a drink for 5 min and performed inspection," he said.
Classic symptoms that arise from diabetes there are 3 of polyuria (lots of urine), polydipsia (drinking a lot) and polyphagia (eating a lot.) Diabetes can occur due to failure of pancreatic beta cells caused by genetic factors, insulin resistance, age, the effects of gastrointestinal hormones, amyloid accumulation and blood sugar levels are too high.
"Insulin functions include sugar into muscle or fat tissue for sugar can be converted into energy. In people who develop resistance, insulin is not able to help incorporate sugar levels become so high," he added.
Dr. Budiman said at the time a person was first diagnosed with diabetes is generally the number of pancreatic beta cells to live 50 percent of which will be progressively decreasing. Therefore sometimes people with diabetes at some point will have to be given insulin from outside.
"If it runs out then the beta cells of the pancreas no longer insulin in the body, so would not want to be given from outside," said the doctor from the division of metabolic endocrine Department of Medicine Faculty of medicine RSCM.
Currently, the level of community care for diabetes is still low because evidenced by the many patients who come to the case of serious complications. World Health Organization (WHO) predicts an increase of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Indonesia by 8.4 million in 2000 to 21.3 million in 2030 and ranks 4th in the world after India, China and the United States. "Because diabetes is genetically inherited, it is important for patients to be screened against the family about the possibility of diabetes," said Dr. Budiman.
